Six Months with the iPhone 13 Pro

My iPhone 13 Pro in Sierra Blue

Disclaimer: This is not advertising for Apple, but merely my thought on the iPhone.

Like many photographers, I choose my smartphones mainly based on their photo and video capabilities.
I started taking photos on a Nokia 6280 a few years before the iPhone. In 2009, I chose the iPhone 3GS. It was the first Apple smartphone to feature tap-to-focus. It had a 3.2 Megapixel sensor coupled with a 28mm equivalent lens opening at f/2.8. Altogether, you ended up with a 2k resolution jpeg image.

We’ve come a long way since the iPhone 3GS, and today, smartphones often offer 8k photos with raw capabilities, except… the iPhone.
However, I’ve always stayed with iPhone for more reasons than the camera.
When it comes to hardware, several other phone manufacturers outperform Apple smartphones. However, unlike DSLR and mirrorless cameras, hardware is not the only thing that matters in the equation.
With such small sensors and small lenses, smartphones must rely on computational photography to provide better photos.

Until September 2021, I had an iPhone X I had purchased on the release date back in September 2017. The iPhone X was game-changing for me. It brought me a second lens and the ability to shoot raw. On top of that, I started buying into the Moment ecosystem, which at the time was a collection of smartphone lenses you could mount on a phone case.

2017 was also the year I started to shoot more and more 35mm film rolls that I integrated with the rest of my work. But the iPhone X was the dual-lens camera that I always had with me, and I took several shots I really liked. In addition, shooting raw images gave me more control over the edit. I could more easily match iPhone photos with the rest of my work, creating a more consistent body of work regarding the camera I used.

I unboxed my iPhone 13 Pro on launch day, and the following day, I drove to Pitt Meadows, BC, to try the new phone featuring a triple lenses system.
