Eggnog

Halloween is now over, and the northern hemisphere is plunging rapidly into winter. This seasonal shift brings many connotations with it. Cold, snow, the holidays, insulated clothing. For me it signals something special. The ephemeral availability of a thick, spiced, cross food group fusion beverage. Yes, eggnog season has arrived, and I am ecstatic. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t drink alcohol, but I do have an affinity for intense foods, and no drink can overwhelm the palate the way cold, straight out of the carton eggnog can. I would like to thank that person who first thought of it. What an invention. Eureka, they thought, let’s take eggs and milk, remove the highest calorie portions, the yolk and the cream, blend them together and add sugar. And if that doesn’t make you gag we will then we’ll throw in some strong spices to top it off. And thus, the quintessential festive drink was born. It is like nothing else. It is creamy. It is rich. It is heavy. It has a full bodied, lively flavor. When consumed it coats the mouth and throat with soothing coolness. It leaves a sense of satisfied contentment. That is no wonder. Typically having 170 calories per half a cup, drinking a small carton will give me more than all the calories I need in a day. Isn’t that wonderful? If I wanted to, I could just drink eggnog and not run out of energy. Of course, after a while nutrient deficiencies would start to have an effect. And It would start to fill out my midsection. But It isn’t meant to be consumed all the time. It is meant to be that special staple of wintertime, bringing delight and warmth to a cold world.
