Did We Evolve So That We Can Live Like This?

You cannot drain from me
anything that I am unwilling to give.
Have you noticed yet that
I’ve broken free?

You cannot take
the me
from me —
It is mine
and mine
it will always be.

And here I am
amongst all of us
and we are important
because we are
the chimps
that wear
suits.

Does no one
ever anymore
see a system
that is broken
at its core
and want to
change
and want to
see a world
restored
refreshed
and ready to
once again
choose to
live
with
us?

What more can we break
more than hearts and homes
and dreams?

What more can we take
more than ours and theirs
and mine?

How many more times
will the land
let herself
be raped
by nothing more
than a fancy ape
who thinks it has
mastered farming?

Somewhere, ironically not high at all
dwell the dragons of the machine
who hoard more than they need
while soaring over mouths hopeful for feed.

Altogether we can sum up
our greatest accomplishments
in a few short lines
yet we can fill papers
daily
and television stations
hourly
with all the atrocities
we are capable of.

Looks like the suits
didn’t make us
better
after
all.
