A Response to Concerns Over EOS Single ABP Launch Strategy
EOS is a new blockchain platform that is in the process of launching right now. It is a completely community-driven launch and IMHO the most ambitious software launch of all time. As such, it is ripe with new and interesting practical questions. However there is also a significant amount of misinformation being spread.
The main unfounded criticism I’ve seen gaining significant traction this past week is the notion that because the chosen launch process is using only a single Appointed Block Producer (ABP) that it is somehow open to vote manipulation. That stems from a lack of understanding of how the software and the launch system works.
To clarify, the launch vote process is secure and reliable because:
The criticisms of the launch vote being centralized and manipulatable are uninformed and focus on the incorrect belief that there is one, anonymous person who is making blocks who can decide which votes are included or not.
The vote is running according to the EOSIO software as it exists in the open source code repository, which has been verified in a decentralized and open manner, and zero people have access to manipulate it.
It’s that simple :)
[As an aside, I would agree that poor communication is a valid criticism of the EOS launch process. However, I also think that is a reasonable and predictable side-effect of having a fully-community-driven launch process, lacking a central body for community management.]
