Krygier and Wood state that “maps are propositions, you must accept responsibility for the realities you create with maps.” Maps are simply propositions where you have the choice to decide where you want to travel based on the map and what are the best ways to get there. A map is related to the world it depicts as it is a representation of the selected features of an area. The information shown on a map is simple and shows visuals of locations; how we are taught about the world is by representing the different shapes, sizes, features, and the distance from one place to another. My understanding of maps around Chicago has changed since I have been here and with the examples that Krygier and Wood provided for maps. This has all changed due to how maps can be represented based on how we view and perceive a specific area that we have been to. There have been places that I have walked out to where I thought “oh this place looks sketchy” and “this area is so busy and has a lot of events going on,” I said this stuff in areas such as the Southside where the area has been deemed as crime-ridden and impoverished to Wrigleyville where there is always an event going on whether it’s for the cubs, parade, or places to go spend time at. I can see these areas on a map and define what I believe is the reality of the city, but it is my responsibility to understand and create a map of the actual existence of how the place represents itself.
