How to Be a Changemaker at Work

Changemakers are connected, involved, and dedicated to the greater good.
I accidentally became a changemaker. There are never enough volunteers to coach, sponsor student activities, work on committees, or plan student field trips. While it should be “all hands on deck” in a school, it often isn’t.
Over the years, I have become more actively involved in the schools where I teach becoming one of the few educators who could be counted on to help in a pinch.
In a particularly sticky situation, one of my colleagues asked if I could help manage an upcoming student event at the last minute.
She explained that she was stuck and needed more support. She then rolled her eyes and commented that it’s “always the same teachers who volunteer.”
In every job I have held, whether as an educator or a contractor, there have been the few who do more for the good of the whole. The few who go above and beyond, actively seeking to positively reflect company values while seeming to never tire of the additional obligations and responsibilities.
These are the changemakers.
The changemakers are the ones who ask more questions, offer more solutions, and take the time to build relationships to help cultivate change.
Every workplace needs a changemaker (or several). The changemakers are the ones who move innovations forward, ask interesting questions, and genuinely care about the greater good of the organization.
