YouTube demonetizes Russian channels and limits access to them in Ukraine for the time being

YouTube stated on Saturday that it will shut off ad income for various Russian state channels, including state-funded media outlet RT, in retaliation to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“In light of the exceptional circumstances in Ukraine,” YouTube, which is owned by Google, said in a statement, “we’re halting a number of channels’ ability to monetise on YouTube, including numerous Russian channels associated with recent sanctions.”In addition, in response to a request from Ukraine’s minister of culture, Oleksandr Tkachenko, the site will lower the frequency with which the concerned channels’ videos appear in recommendations and will restrict access to RT’s videos in Ukraine. TV companies such as DirecTV and Dish have also been pressured to exclude RT from their lineup.

“The Kremlin’s major methods of support, justification, and evasion of sanction for its unlawful and monstrous invasion of Ukraine are disinformation, misinformation, and weaponized falsehoods,” Tkachenko stated.

Although YouTube did not name the channels that have been demonetized, Ukraine’s Digital Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has written to YouTube and Meta, requesting that they “ban the propaganda Russian channels — such as Russia 24, TASS, and RIA Novosti.”

The action by YouTube comes a day after Meta announced similar limitations on Facebook and Instagram, stating that the firm was adopting new rules “prohibiting Russian state media from running advertisements or profiting on our platform anywhere in the globe.”
