5 Ridiculous productivity apps to conquer your day

Squeezing more time in our days is always a challenge, especially when we spend hours procrastinating! I need structure with all the events that come at me during the day, i’m sure some of you can relate, as a result i have tried and tested many apps.

I use these apps together daily(minus #3) , along with a “power hour” method, and notice an increase in energy and motivation throughout the day regardless of the task.

There are dozens of time management apps that utilise the Pomodomo technique but the best app i have found is Forest by Seekrtech co. As i write this post, the app is currently ranked #1 in productivity, if my memory serves me correctly, it was ranked #3 when i downloaded it 6 months ago.

It is important to note this is not a free app and costs a one-of- purchase of a mere $2.99 and was the first ever app i splashed cash on. It took many days of weighing up the cost before i decided to take the jump. Yes even over a $2.99 purchase.

The aim of the game is to plant your tree( start your timer, usually 20 min)and resist the temptation to change apps or scroll Facebook, you can lock the phone however.

I find you have approximately 10 seconds before it dies and appears in your daily forest that way.

The are two main features that stands out of about this app,

The “planting a real tree” feature alone makes it worth the $2.99, for the other features are just an added bonus.

If you are looking for a free version to test your commitment for a few weeks, i recommend:

Be Focused(FREE)- This is a very simple app and its base function is a timer for yourself.

Yes you could use the stopwatch on your phone or any other tool to time a 25 minute period but as we are talking about apps this my top pick. i find using a timing app beneficial as you will be less inclined to use your phone as it is doing the countdown for you. It is also handy as you can see stats of the amount of time dedicated every week to your goals.

2. CREATING HABITS

Every day should start with your personal routine, as the legend Tony Robins states:

You may have them written down or go into automatic mode every morning but the idea is once you have a ritual in place, to change or add another habit. If you read 20 pages in the morning over coffee, change it to 30 pages, why not extend your meditation from 5 minutes to 7 minutes.

The app of choice is Habitica by HabitRPG, Inc.

This app allows you to play role playing game while completing habits, of course you do not need to engage in this aspect of the game but as you complete habits you will gain experience points and level up your character.

This app has three main panels at the home screen;

The great part about this section is you will lose health for each task you did not complete. When you get to zero, well your character dies and you will need to buy a health potion, which costs money, which means you will need to complete more habits.

3. To Do’s- One of the great features of this app is you can take on challenges through the Habitica community, when you do, one off “to-do’s” will appear. For example my to do’s list includes “read a non-fiction book for July”(and every month after) as part of read a book a month challenge.

The app features a reward system in which you buy equipment for your avatar or you can even buy rewards, such as watch TV for an hour. There’s also a tavern, join a party, guilds, challenges and go on quests to attack monsters.

Just because you have these options does not mean you need to participate, if you would simply like to use it as a motivator by not losing health, or joining a challenge to experience new things.

3. GOALS

Firstly I must admit that i had to do some research about this section as i find you feel more accountable when you hand write your goals in a diary and review them every day. But my results are as follows;

Remente- self improvement by Remente

The first thing i noticed when i installed it is there is no instructions to walk you through how to set up the goals but after playing around with the app for 5 minutes It was fairly simply.

In true journal format, this app tracks your mood and allows you to put comments regarding the day. This not only tracks your goals but your health and wellness.

When you have clear daily goals and know what has to be completed daily to compound the results in order to achieve your big goal, you will be amazed how productive you can be. This app may convert me from pen and paper to phone and finger!

4. MEDITATION

When i was in the planning phase for writing this post i had an app called Calm, which i am sure you have heard thanks to their great marketing. But recently i discover;

Primed Mind by Primed MindGmbH

This is very similar to the other meditation apps that are on the market but with added playlists that really stand out. You can choose the playlist to go to sleep with, which i find to be the same as other apps morning meditation, or you can start your day with a daily habit meditation which will ignite your day.

Noteworthy playlists(most are paid subscription) include;

On top of all of these playlist the app features one of sessions called “Primers”. These are great sessions and the app encourages people to complete a session before completing a certain activity, e.g the pump up playlist before a meeting.

5. Knowledge

This may seem like a waste of a space to many, but one way to be more productive is to read non-fiction. Reading book is not only important to stay sharp, but also a great tool to learn from masters of other disciplines, for example, I have read 6 books on time management by many professors and PHD scientists.

Six months ago I was in the dilemma of “if i am reading at the rate of nearly two books a week, i cannot afford to buy hard copies. How will i keep this pace?”. I looked through the common kindle and other websites to see the prices. This was a dead end.

Then Scribd appeared.

This has been hands done the biggest factor that has allowed myself to be on track.

You will find popular books and great content but the only downside is that the newest and latest books are not added for a few months. This can be overlooked by the amount of selection that is available for this low price.

Another great feature, you can access the app on your computer! I use to spend 10 minutes on a Sunday to sit down and scroll the app to download 3 books to listen to during the week on my laptop. When i logged into the app via my phone, it synced, and all the books i downloaded on my laptop appeared.

If you want to increase you productivity I suggest having a morning routine and implement at least one of these apps. It may seem like an effort having 5 different apps but i can assure you, IT IS NOT! As Abraham Lincoln states
